Itinerary
The duration of this tour is 12 days total. Our accommodation locations are fixed, but we otherwise spend our days chasing the best light and conditions. A brief summary is provided below; a more detailed itinerary will be made available prior to the tour.
Prior to the tour. We recommend staying in Queenstown the night before the tour (not included in the tour price).
Day 1. We meet at around 9am in Queenstown for introductions and a delicious breakfast. Then, we make our way north and head out for our first photography session in Aoraki-Mt Cook National Park.
Days 2-6. For the next couple off days we explore the glaciated valleys, alpine lakes, and ice-capped peaks of Aoraki-Mt Cook National Park. From the ground, we’ll be doing a couple of small hikes to some of the park’s most iconic locations, including the Hooker Valley and Tasman Lake. And from the air, we’ll soar over the alps via helicopter. If that weren’t enough, we’ll visit the sparkling turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo and see the famous Church of the Good Shepherd. Back south we then travel to the idyllic town of Wanaka for two nights, where we’ll shoot an infamous little tree in a lake and go on a day trip to Haast Pass along the “Waterfall Highway”. Then it’s a short drive back to Queenstown, and in the late afternoon, we’re off on our second scenic flight over the Southern Alps and Fiordland National Park.
Day 7. A full rest day in Queenstown. The choice is yours: kick back and relax, catch up on some post-processing, or explore the delights of New Zealand’s premiere visitor location. Any activities on the rest day are not included in the tour price.
Days 8-11. We’re off to a local Queenstown spot for sunrise and then spend the day up the lake in Glenorchy. The next morning we head further south to perhaps New Zealand’s greatest jewel: Milford Sound / Piopiotahi. We’ll be staying in luxury accommodation nestled in the rainforest of Fiordland National Park, and use our days to explore the glacially-carved fiord, by both land and sea (yip, we’ll be taking a 2-hr scenic boat cruise!). After a couple of nights, we then head to Manapouri for the grand finale of the tour, an overnight boat cruise exploring the mesmerising and remote Doubtful Sound / Patea.
Day 12. Our final day. We wake up on a boat in a tranquil fiord, and by around 4pm, we’ll be back in Queenstown, bidding new friends and fellow photographers goodbye. Accommodation on this night is not included in the tour price.
The tour vibe
This trip is all about maximising our time in the field, and being at the right places at the right times, to capture outstanding portfolio-worthy images. John and Daniel will be continuously available to assist you with any technical questions and composition guidance, and will happily share their methods and secrets with you.
We don’t have any formal indoor classroom sessions planned, but if the weather is so terrible that we can’t get out and shoot (a rare occurrence!), we’ll most certainly make use of those indoor periods to spend some time behind our laptops.
Outside the shooting sessions, we try to set a relaxed pace. It’s important to us that everyone avoids burn-out and stoke levels are kept at the highest possible level throughout the trip.
It’s also important to us, beyond the photography, that you have the best possible time making new friends with your fellow photographers and experiencing other delights New Zealand has to offer. We make plenty of time for good food and fun times!
